Our Signature Creamy-licious Drink Horchata De Chufa
This plant-based drink had our hearts at first taste. Made from the super tuber Chufa and water, it is full of nutritious goodness and can also be used as a healthier alternative to dairy. Originating from Spain,Horchata is widely consumed by locals as a chilled summer drink to quench their thirst under the sweltering summer sun. It is usually eaten together with “Fartons” – a lightly sweetened and softbreadstick suitable for dipping in Horchata. Horchata is both delicious and healthy. We call it chufa elixir – all goodness of chufa are concentrated in this delicious drink.
So, what is Chufa?
Grown underground, this super tuber is actually a root vegetable (same family as potatoes and carrots). It is extremely high in dietary fibre to keep you feeling fuller for longer. It also contains minerals and vitamins to keep your body going. Chufa is actually the Spanish name of this super tuber. In English, it is known as the Tigernut. Chufashave an interesting taste which people describe as coconuts or almonds with a naturally sweet aftertaste. They have been cultivated and used as food and medicine since early civilisations such as the Persians and Egyptians. Currently, they are largely grown in Spain and some African countries. The Chufas offered by us are lovingly sourced from Valencia, Spain.
Legend has it…
A young girl once offered a sweet, white drink to the King of Aragon, Jaime I. "What is that?" he asked the young girl, pleasantly surprised by its flavour. "It's chufa milk" she responded, to which he replied "Aixo no esllet, aixoes or xata" ("That is not milk, that is gold, my pretty one"). Since then, many have attributed the word 'Horchata' to this appraisal of the drink by the King. King Jaime I was not the only one to be fascinated by the drink, we are very much captivated too.
